Breathwork for Menopause: A Functional Approach

Practical, powerful tools to reset your nervous system and feel more in control

Breathing is something we do all the time but most of us are doing it inefficiently, especially under stress. And during menopause, when anxiety, sleep issues, brain fog and hot flushes are already draining your energy, dysfunctional breathing can quietly make everything worse.

This isn’t about Wim Hof-style extremes or the exaggerated breathing you’ve seen on TV. Functional breathwork is subtle, science backed and sustainable. It helps you change how you breathe all the time—not just during a session—so your body can move out of stress mode and into a state of calm.

This isn’t meditation either. It’s a physical, measurable shift in how your nervous system works. It’s about giving your body a reliable, low effort tool you can use in meetings, on the train, in bed at 2am or wherever symptoms strike.

The Link Between Breath and Stress

Why how you breathe matters more than you think

There’s a direct line between your breath and your nervous system. When your breathing is shallow, fast or held without you realising, it signals to your brain that you’re under threat. The result? A constant drip of stress hormones like cortisol, amplifying menopause symptoms such as hot flushes, anxiety, fatigue and brain fog.

Functional breathing helps you switch gears. It activates your parasympathetic nervous system—the part responsible for rest, recovery, digestion and emotional regulation. With just a few minutes of focused practice each day, you can start rewiring your body’s stress response from the inside out.

And the best part?
You can use it anywhere, any time. No yoga mat. No quiet room required. Just you and your breath, retrained to work for you, not against you.

I used to feel like I was on the verge of a panic attack every time I got on the train. Now, not only can I take the train without worry but if I feel a twinge of anxiety, I have the tools to overcome it
