Not just for symptom relief
During menopause you may turn to supplements to obtain some symptom relief. Hot flushes, night sweats, improve your mood or to get some sleep. However, supplements can be most useful when looking at the prevention of long term health conditions. Women lose bone mass rapidly as they transition through menopause and are at higher risk of osteoporosis. This may not be on your radar as this isn’t something you can feel happening or see any improvements when you begin supplementing but using supplements in this way can be particularly beneficial.
Bone health & supplements
You may be thinking that you get plenty of calcium in your diet, or conversely think that you simply need to take calcium to address bone loss. This isn’t the case. There are a number of vitamin ands minerals that work together to ensure that you can both absorb and utilise calcium supplies . In the main these are vitamin d3, k2, and magnesium. You can find examples of where you can obtain these through your diet here (about half way down the page). Typically, we do not have adequate levels and most likely would need to top up. City Survivor’s Pollution Protection could be an option for you here. Ensuring you are consuming enough protein is important too.
How do you know your supplement is good quality?
This was the first of the questions my followers wanted answered. Daisy explained that supplements that come in low price tablet form, you should be wary.
Check the ingredients list for bulking agents and fillers
A couple of common ones to look for include Magnesium stearate, stearic acid and Gelatine.
Check out the brand. Do they have nutrition advice available? Daisy offers a consultation service to help you decide what supplements are best for you. A reputable brand should do this.
What about if you have a pre-existing health condition?
The advice here is simple. If you have a health condition, if you are taking prescribed medication then you need to be consulting with your GP or health practitioner to look at potential drug interactions. Nutrient supplements tend to have less contraindications that herbal remedies. If you are concerned in any way, you can check with the supplement provider and if they don’t know they should be referring you back to your GP.
Why do medical doctors tend not to believe in supplements, while holistic practitioners are all for them?
Your average GP does not have a significant amount of nutrition training and many simply do not have time during a brief 10 minute consultation. A GP would also be looking at deficiencies, so making sure you are above a baseline level of say, Vitamin D. Other nutritionists and health providers will be looking at optimal health levels, which are two very different things.
