This month when I collected my Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) prescription I found my usual Utrogestan had been replaced with Gepretix. Luckily, being a Menopause Coach I was already aware of the introduction of this formulation of progesterone, but it still took me by surprise! So, I thought I would share a post with you to keep you in the loop.
What Exactly is Gepretix?
Gepretix, like Utrogestan, contains micronised progesterone, which is essentially the same hormone our bodies naturally produce. It’s a key component of HRT. But why is progesterone important, especially in the context of HRT?
For those with a womb, progesterone is essential for protecting the lining of the womb. It balances the effects of oestrogen. This form of progesterone, found in Gepretix and Utrogestan, is derived from yams and is identical to the progesterone produced by our bodies.
Why the Switch to Gepretix?
The switch to Gepretix from Utrogestan in some prescriptions may initially cause concern or confusion. But you might not come across it at all! However, it’s important to understand that this is essentially the same product, made by a different company. That said, it’s also important to acknowledge that some women have reported a worsening of symptoms with the switch. I’ll personally be tracking my own experience with Gepretix and will keep you updated with my findings.
If you have a strong preference for Utrogestan, due to brand familiarity or a previous positive experience, you can request your prescriber to specifically state “Utrogestan” on your prescription. This small step ensures you receive the exact product you’re comfortable with.
Addressing Shortages and Offering Choices
Personally, I feel the introduction of alternatives like Gepretix is, in many ways, a positive development. If you have been taking HRT for a while now, you will be all too aware of the recent shortages and this helps to ensure we have access to medication without interruption. Offering choices empowers us to make informed decisions about our health care, especially during a period as significant as menopause.
Final Thoughts
Whether it’s Utrogestan or Gepretix as part of your HRT, the most important aspect is finding what works best for you, in consultation with your healthcare provider.
