I recently had a conversation that many of you might find familiar. It revolved around the challenges of navigating perimenopause and the difficulty in finding a starting point amidst brain fog and all the overwhelming information there is out there.
The Common Struggle
The person I spoke with shared her struggle with persistent brain fog, fatigue, and poor sleep. Although her GP suggested exploring Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT), she knew deep down that aspects of her lifestyle could use some fine-tuning.. The dilemma? Too much information and no clear starting point.
Simplifying the Complex: Focusing on Sleep
We used my coaching approach to strip everything back to basics. What was the one improvement she yearned for most? For her, it was sleep. By focusing on this single goal, we could direct our efforts more efficiently. There are a number of factors influencing sleep – diet, caffeine and alcohol consumption, daily routines, physical activity, stress management, and more.
Taking the First Step: Easy and Exciting Changes
Together, we identified areas she felt ready to tackle. Some of these changes felt effortless, others sparked excitement. The sweet spot? Changes that felt both easy and exciting. This became our starting point.
Practical Changes: Diet and Routine Adjustments
Her initial steps included replacing her usual breakfast cereal with a protein-rich veggie omelette filled with creamy ricotta cheese or quark and moderating her tea consumption. Instead of a complete overhaul, she chose specific days for these changes, tracking their impact in my menopause guide and journal.
Small Steps, Big Impact: The Power of Manageable Changes
Had she attempted a number of changes all at once, identifying what brought improvements to her symptoms would have been like finding a needle in a haystack. Similarly, had she gone full throttle, applying these changes every day, the likelihood of sticking to them would be low. Starting small, with manageable adjustments, was key to her feeling successful, motivated and happy – crucial elements in bringing about long-term change.
The Bigger Picture: Laying the Right Foundations
Navigating perimenopause and menopause don’t have to be daunting. Often, it’s about laying the right foundations – nourishing your body, reducing stress, and infusing your life with joy. Sometimes, all you need is a bit of guidance to set you on the right path.
